So, you booked a ticket to Split. Now what?
Most travel guides tell you the obvious things: “Visit the Palace” or “Eat ice cream.”
They don’t tell you that the stones in the Old Town are slippery as ice, that you will get fined €600 for walking in a bikini, or that Uber prices triple during Ultra Europe.
I have lived in Split for over 17 years. I have seen every mistake a tourist can make.
Here is your Essential Cheat Sheet to planning, packing, and surviving your trip to the capital of Dalmatia.
1. The “Before You Go” Checklist
Currency: It is the EURO (€)
Croatia switched to the Euro in 2023.
- Card vs. Cash: You can use Visa/Mastercard in 90% of restaurants and supermarkets. However, you NEED cash for:
- Bakeries (for your morning Burek).
- Small souvenir stands.
- Tipping (waiters often cannot add tips to card machines).
- ATMs: Avoid the yellow/blue “Euronet” ATMs you see everywhere. They charge massive fees. Use official bank ATMs (OTP, PBZ, Erste, HPB).
Power Plugs
We use Type C and F (standard European 2-pin). The voltage is 230V. If you are coming from the US or UK, bring an adapter.
Water
Yes, you can drink the tap water. It is some of the cleanest in Europe (comes from the Jadro river).
- Pro Tip: Don’t buy plastic bottles. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up at the public fountains (špine) around the city.
2. Getting In: The Airport Trap
Split Airport (SPU) is 25km from the city. The traffic in summer is brutal.
- The Mistake: Hopping into the first taxi you see outside arrivals. You might pay €60–€80.
- The Fix:
- Airport Shuttle Bus: Costs ~€8. Takes you to the Main Bus Station (Ferry Port).
- Uber/Bolt: Usually €30–€40 (but surges in high season).
- Private Transfer: The most stress-free option. Book a fixed-price transfer here.
3. Where to Stay: Decoding the Neighborhoods
Don’t just look at the photos; look at the map.
- Old Town (Diocletian’s Palace):
- Vibe: You are in the center of the action.
- Pros: No walking. History everywhere.
- Cons: NOISY. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. No cars allowed (you have to drag your suitcase).
- Veli Varoš:
- Vibe: Medieval maze of stone houses.
- Pros: Quiet, charming, authentic.
- Cons: Lots of stairs. Not wheelchair friendly.
- Bačvice:
- Vibe: Beach & Residential.
- Pros: 5 mins to the beach, 10 mins to town. Flat terrain.
- Cons: Can be loud near the clubs at night.
4. Getting Around: The “No Car” Rule
Do not rent a car for your time in Split.
- Why? The Old Town is pedestrian-only. Parking costs €2–€4 per hour and is impossible to find.
- When to rent? Only on the day you leave Split to explore the rest of Croatia (e.g., driving to Plitvice Lakes or Dubrovnik).
- Use Uber or Bolt: They are reliable and cheaper than street taxis.
- Walk: Split is tiny. You can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes.
5. Local Laws & Etiquette (Don’t Get Fined!)
Split has introduced strict new rules to control “party tourism.”
- The Bikini Rule: You cannot walk through the Old Town in swimwear (bikini or shirtless). Fine: €150. Cover up when you leave the beach.
- Public Drinking: Drinking alcohol in public squares (outside of bars) is technically banned in certain zones.
- Tipping: It is not mandatory like in the US, but it is polite.
- Coffee: Round up to the nearest Euro.
- Meals: Leave 10% if the service was good.
6. Safety: The “Split Shuffle”
Split is incredibly safe. Violent crime is almost non-existent.
The biggest danger? The polished stones.
After 1,700 years of people walking on them, the limestone streets are slippery as glass—especially when wet.
- Advice: Leave the high heels at home. Wear shoes with grip.

7. Planning Your Itinerary
Don’t try to do everything. Here is a realistic breakdown:
- Day 1: The History.Explore the Palace. Climb the Bell Tower. Drink coffee on the Riva.
- Must Do: Book a Walking Tour to understand what you are looking at.
- Day 2: The Islands.Take a ferry to Hvar or join a 5 Islands Speedboat Tour to see the Blue Cave.
- Day 3: Nature.Go to Krka Waterfalls for a swim-free nature day, or Plitvice Lakes for epic views.
