Is it a construction site? Is it a parking lot? No—as of 2026, Žnjan is officially Split’s most modern beach destination.
For years, Žnjan (pronounced Zhn-yan) was the “ugly duckling” of Split’s coast—a massive, dusty plateau filled with cars and makeshift cafes. But after a massive multi-million euro renovation, it has completely transformed. Locals now jokingly call it the “Miami of Split” due to its white stone promenades, palm trees, and modern architecture.
But is it right for you? Unlike the historic charm of the Old Town, Žnjan is bold, concrete, and purpose-built. Here is everything you need to know before you grab your towel.
What to Expect: The Vibe
Žnjan is not a “wild” natural beach like you’ll find on Marjan Hill. It is an Urban City Beach.
- The Look: Think wide paved promenades, designer solar-powered shade structures, and manicured horticulture. It feels spacious and clean.
- The Surface: The beach itself consists of pebbles (small to medium stones) entering the sea, backed by large sunbathing areas.
- The Crowd: It’s huge (the largest beach in Split), so it attracts everyone: local families, teenagers at the skate park, and tourists looking for space.
Where to Stay near Žnjan (Sleep by the Sea)
One of the best things about Žnjan is that you can stay right on the beachfront and skip the morning traffic. If you want a resort-style holiday within the city, these are the two best hotels in the area:
- Radisson Blu Resort & Spa: The most famous hotel in the area. It sits on the hill directly above the beach, offering incredible views, a massive spa, and a luxury breakfast buffet. You can walk from the pool to the sea in 2 minutes. Check rates and availability here.
- Amphora Hotel: Located right on the beachfront promenade, the Amphora is modern, stylish, and features multiple pools with sea views. It is slightly closer to the water than the Radisson and has a fantastic rooftop bar. See photos and prices here.
- Private Apartments: If you prefer a kitchen and more space, the Žnjan neighborhood is packed with modern apartments. Browse top-rated apartments in Žnjan here.
How to Get to Žnjan Beach
Žnjan is located about 3km (1.8 miles) east of the Old Town. Here is how to reach it:
1. By Bus (Cheapest) Split’s public transport (Promet Split) has two lines that drop you right above the beach.
- Line 8 (Žnjan to Pazar/Market): This loops from the big Green Market (Pazar) near the Palace down to Žnjan.
- Line 15 (Duilovo to Trajektna Luka/Ferry): Connects the ferry port area to the beach.
2. By Uber/Taxi (Easiest) A ride from the Old Town (Riva) usually costs between €6 and €9. It takes about 10–15 minutes depending on traffic.
3. Walking (Scenic) If it’s not too hot, you can walk along the coast from Bačvice Beach through Trstenik. It takes about 40–50 minutes, but it’s a lovely seaside stroll the entire way.
The Parking Situation (A Game Changer)
This is the #1 reason locals love the new Žnjan. In a city where parking is a nightmare, Žnjan now features a massive underground garage with hundreds of spaces. This keeps the cars off the beach (it’s now a pedestrian-only zone) but makes arrival stress-free.
Pro Tip: Renting a Car? Since Žnjan has such easy parking, it is the perfect base if you plan to rent a car to visit Krka Waterfalls or Omiš. You won’t have to worry about finding a spot when you return. Check Discover Cars to compare rental prices in Split.
Facilities & Amenities
The renovation focused heavily on public infrastructure. You no longer have to hunt for a toilet or rinse off with bottled water.
- Showers & Changing Cabins: Placed at regular intervals along the beach (Free to use).
- Toilets: Modern public restrooms are available and maintained regularly.
- Accessibility: Žnjan is the most accessible beach in Split. It features ramps, lifts for entering the sea, and flat, wide paths perfect for wheelchairs and strollers.
FAQ: Questions Travelers Ask
1. Is Žnjan a sandy beach? No. Like 95% of beaches in Croatia, it is pebble and stone. The entry to the sea is pebbled and the sunbathing areas are gravel or paved plateaus.
Save Your Feet: Walking on pebbles can be painful if you aren’t used to it! I highly recommend bringing a pair of Water Shoes. You can buy them at the beach stalls (overpriced) or grab a cheap pair online before you pack.
2. Is the water clean? Yes! Surprisingly, the water clarity at Žnjan is excellent. It faces the open Brač Channel, so the currents keep the water fresh and blue—often much cleaner than the enclosed bay of Bačvice.
3. Is it dog-friendly? The main swimming areas are not for dogs. However, there is traditionally a dedicated “Dog Beach” at the far eastern end (Duilovo area), just past the main Žnjan zone.
4. Do I have to pay to enter? No. Žnjan is a public beach. Access is 100% free. You only pay for extras like sunbed rentals or coffee.
The Verdict: Should You Visit?
- SKIP IT IF: You want secluded nature, pine forests, or total silence.
- VISIT IF: You want easy parking, accessibility, clean facilities, crystal clear water, and a place to keep the kids entertained all day.
