If you only have one day in Croatia, which waterfall should you chase?
Choosing between krka vs plitvice from split is one of the most common questions visitors ask — both are stunning national parks, both take a full day, but they offer very different experiences. It is the most common debate among travelers in Split: Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park?
Both are world-famous. Both feature stunning turquoise waters and cascading waterfalls. And honestly? You can’t go wrong with either. But they are very different experiences, especially when traveling from Split.
If you are trying to decide between the grandeur of Plitvice and the relaxed vibes of Krka, this guide will help you choose the perfect day trip for your style.

Plitvice Lakes: The UNESCO Giant
Plitvice Lakes (Plitvička Jezera) is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and consistently voted one of the most beautiful places in Europe.
Why you should choose Plitvice: If you want to see “The Big One,” this is it. Plitvice is a massive system of 16 interconnected lakes arranged in cascades. The color of the water changes constantly from azure to green, grey, or blue depending on the minerals and sunlight.
- The Scale: It is huge. You can spend 4 to 8 hours just walking the trails.
- The Scenery: The “Veliki Slap” (Big Waterfall) is 78 meters high and truly awe-inspiring.
- The Experience: It feels like a true hiking expedition. You walk on wooden boardwalks right over the water, surrounded by forest.
The Downside: It is a long day. From Split, the drive is nearly 3 hours each way. That means 6 hours of your day is just sitting in a bus or car. If you have small children or hate long drives, this might be exhausting.
Local Tip: Plitvice sells out days in advance during summer. If you go, you must buy tickets online before you drive there!

Krka National Park: The Relaxed Alternative
Krka is often called “Plitvice’s little sister,” but that doesn’t do it justice. Located just near Šibenik, it is significantly closer to Split.
Why you should choose Krka: Krka feels more like a “fun day out” than a hiking expedition. The main attraction is Skradinski Buk, a massive natural pool with 17 waterfalls crashing into it.
- The Convenience: It’s only 1 hour from Split via the highway. You can leave at 9:00 AM and be back for dinner easily.
- The Boat Ride: Most visitors enter via the town of Skradin, which includes a beautiful 20-minute boat ride up the river canyon to the park entrance.
- Cultural Sites: Krka has old watermills, a blacksmith shop, and an ethno-village that shows how people used to live here.
The Downside: It is smaller. The main loop around Skradinski Buk only takes about 60–90 minutes to walk. If you are a hardcore hiker, you might find it too short unless you venture to the northern parts (Roški Slap).
The Big Questions Answered
1. Can you swim? (The 2026 Update)
This is the most common question we get.
- Plitvice: Swimming has been banned for many years.
- Krka: As of 2021, swimming is no longer allowed at the main Skradinski Buk waterfall to protect the ecosystem.
- The Loophole: While you can’t swim under the waterfall anymore, you can swim in the town of Skradin (where the park boat departs) or at designated spots further upstream at Roški Slap.
2. Which is better for kids?
Krka is generally better for families. The travel time is shorter, the walking paths are easier, and there are more shaded spots to sit and eat ice cream. Plitvice involves a lot of walking, and strollers are very difficult to use on the uneven wooden planks.
3. When should I go?
- Spring/Autumn: Plitvice is unbeatable. The water is high, and the trees are colorful.
- Peak Summer (July/August): Both are crowded, but Krka offers more chances to cool off in the shade or catch a breeze on the boat. Plitvice can get very hot on the trails.
The Verdict: Which one should you book?
Choose Plitvice Lakes if:
- It is your first time in Croatia and you want to see the most famous sight.
- You don’t mind a 3-hour drive for spectacular views.
- You love photography and hiking.
Choose Krka Waterfalls if:
- You prefer a relaxed day with less travel time (1 hour vs 3 hours).
- You are traveling with young children or seniors.
- You want to combine the park with a visit to the historic city of Šibenik or a wine tasting (which many tours include).
