There is no “wrong” time to visit Split, but there is a “wrong” time for you.
The best time to visit Split really depends on what you want from the trip — summer gives you beach weather but peak crowds, while May and September offer warm temperatures and a city that actually feels liveable. Are you coming to swim? To party? Or to see history without sweating?
Split changes completely depending on the month. In August, it is a bustling, hot Mediterranean metropolis. In January, it is a quiet, sleepy town where locals drink coffee in coats.
Here is the honest month-by-month breakdown to help you pick your perfect dates.
The Cheat Sheet: Quick Answers
- Best for Swimming: July, August, September.
- Best for Sightseeing (No Sweat): May and October.
- Best for Budget: November to March.
- Best for Nightlife (Ultra): July.
Spring: The “Smart” Season (April – June)
April: The Awakening
- Weather: Mild (15°C – 20°C). Crisp mornings, sunny afternoons.
- Vibe: The city is waking up. Ferries start running more often, but the sea is still too cold for most people (15°C).
- Price: Low.
May: The Local Favorite
- Weather: Perfect (20°C – 25°C). You can wear t-shirts, but you need a jacket at night.
- Why go: May 7th is Sudamja (St. Domnius Day). It is the biggest party of the year with processions and bingo on the Riva. Read our full guide to Sudamja here.
- Swimming? Only for the brave.
June: The Calm Before the Storm
- Weather: Hot (25°C – 30°C).
- Vibe: Summer has started, but schools aren’t out yet, so it’s not overcrowded. All beach bars are open.
- Verdict: Probably the best month of the year.
Summer: The Party Season (July – August)
July: Ultra Madness
- Weather: Hot & Dry (30°C+).
- The Big Event: Ultra Europe Festival (Mid-July). 150,000 people descend on the city. Prices for apartments triple.
- Warning: If you are not coming for the festival, check the dates and avoid that weekend!
August: Peak Heat
- Weather: Scorchingly Hot (33°C+). The stones in the Old Town radiate heat at night.
- Vibe: Crowded. The narrow streets of Diocletian’s Palace are packed.
- Tip: Do your sightseeing at 8:00 AM or 8:00 PM. Spend the middle of the day at Kašjuni Beach or on a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon.

Autumn: The “Velvet” Season (September – October)
September: The Extension of Summer
- Weather: Warm (25°C – 28°C).
- Why go: The sea is still warm from the summer (23°C), but the extreme heat and the Ultra crowds are gone. This is the favorite month for older travelers and couples.
October: The Last Swim
- Weather: Unpredictable (18°C – 22°C). You might get a week of perfect sun, or you might get rain.
- Vibe: End of season. Beach bars start closing around Oct 15th.
- Swimming? Possible in early October, but chilly by Halloween.

Winter: The Authentic Season (November – March)
November – March: The Quiet Time
- Weather: Cool & Rainy (8°C – 15°C). It rarely snows, but the “Bura” wind can be freezing.
- What is closed? Most beach bars, many souvenir shops, and seasonal restaurants on the islands close down.
- What is open? The Old Town never closes. Locals still drink coffee on the Riva every sunny day. The museums are empty, and you can have Diocletian’s Palace to yourself.
- Highlight: Advent in Split (December). The Riva and Prokurative Square fill with Christmas markets, mulled wine, and ice skating.
