If you could only choose one day of the year to visit Split, choose May 7th.
Sudamja Festival Split is the city’s biggest annual celebration — the feast day of Saint Domnius (Sveti Duje), patron saint of Split, held every 7th May with processions, music and food across the whole old town. Forget Ultra Europe. Forget New Year’s Eve. The real heart of Split beats on Sudamja—the Feast of Saint Domnius (Sveti Duje).
It is the city’s official birthday, a massive street party, and a religious procession all rolled into one. The entire city shuts down, schools are closed, and everyone from toddlers to grandmas descends on the Riva.
If you are lucky enough to be in Split on May 7, 2026, here is your guide to the wooden butterflies, the bingo madness, and the traditions you need to know.
Who was St. Domnius (Sv. Duje)?
Irony is a part of Split’s DNA. St. Domnius was a Bishop of Salona who was executed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 304 AD.
Fast forward 1,700 years: Diocletian is dead, and his mausoleum (tomb) has been turned into the Cathedral of St. Domnius. The victim took over the Emperor’s bedroom. We celebrate this victory every year.

The 2026 Sudamja Schedule: What to Expect
The celebration isn’t just one day; it lasts for a week. However, the main events happen on May 6th and 7th.
1. The Riva Fair (May 6–7)
The waterfront promenade (Riva) transforms into a massive market. Hundreds of stalls line the street selling traditional crafts.
- The “Wooden Spoon” Rule: Tradition says you must buy something made of wood for your home on this day. It brings good luck. You will see locals walking around carrying wooden spoons, spatulas, and bowls.
- The Klepetuša: This is the symbol of Sudamja. It is a colorful wooden bird toy on a stick. When you push it, the wings flap and make a loud clack-clack sound. If you are traveling with kids, you must buy one.

2. The Procession (May 7, 10:00 AM)
This is the solemn part. The relics (bones) of St. Domnius are taken out of the Cathedral. A massive procession of bishops, soldiers, and locals walks from the Peristyle, through the Silver Gate, Pazar, and down to the Riva for a huge open-air mass.
- Tip: If you want to watch, stand near the Silver Gate (Pazar side) around 09:45 AM for the best view of the costumes.
3. The Tombbola (The Bingo)
In the afternoon (usually around 5:30 PM), the strangest event takes place.
The “Tombbola” is a massive game of Bingo played by the entire city on the Riva.
- How to play: You buy a ticket for €1 or €2 from street sellers.
- The Vibe: A man reads the numbers from a stage. If he reads a number slowly, the crowd whistles. If someone wins, 20,000 people cheer. It is chaotic and hilarious.
- The “Cincila”: If the announcer pulls the number 77, everyone screams “Cincila!” (Don’t ask why, just scream along).
4. The Concert & Fireworks
The night ends with a free concert by a major Croatian pop star on the Riva, followed by a fireworks display over the harbor.
Other Sudamja Traditions
The Flower Fair in the Basements
During Sudamja week, the damp, dark cellars of Diocletian’s Palace are filled with elaborate flower arrangements. It is a stunning contrast between ancient stone and fresh blooms.
The Rowing Regatta (Oxford vs. Cambridge vs. Split)
Usually held the weekend before Sudamja, legendary rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities come to Split to race against the veterans of Gusar (the Split rowing club) in the harbor.
