“Where is the sandy beach?”
The best beaches in Split Croatia range from the city’s famous Bačvice (where you can wade in shallow warm water) to hidden pebble coves below Marjan Hill that locals guard like a secret. This is the first question every tourist asks me.
Here is the hard truth: Split is not famous for sand. We are famous for crystal-clear pebble bays, dramatic cliffs, and turquoise water.
If you are looking for the Caribbean, you are in the wrong place. But if you want to swim in some of the cleanest water in the Mediterranean, you are in paradise.
Here is my honest local guide to the best swimming spots in Split, ranked by “Vibe.”
1. Bačvice Beach: The Only Sandy One
Best For: Families with toddlers & Picigin players.
- The Vibe: Crowded, loud, and local. This is the city’s living room.
- The Sand: Yes, it is sand! But it is dark/grey sand, not white.
- The “Picigin” Game: You will see men jumping around in the shallow water chasing a small ball. This is Picigin, a UNESCO-protected game invented right here.
- Warning: Because it is sandy and shallow, the water can look cloudy (murky) in the afternoon. It is clean, just stirred up.
| Pros | Cons |
| ✅ Sand (Soft on feet) | ❌ Crowded like sardines |
| ✅ Shallow (Safe for kids) | ❌ Cloudy water |
| ✅ Right in the city center | ❌ No natural shade |
2. Kašjuni Beach: The Instagram Star
Best For: Couples, Influencers & Sunset Lovers.
- The Vibe: Chic beach bars, lounge music, and pine trees.
- The Setting: Located at the foot of Marjan Hill, the scenery is dramatic. The water is turquoise and crystal clear.
- The “Zones”:
- Left: Families & Locals.
- Center: Joe’s Beach Bar (Sunbeds €30+).
- Far Right: Dog Beach & FKK (Nudist).
- Getting There: Take Bus No. 12 or an Uber. Do not drive (parking is a nightmare). Read my full guide on Kašjuni Beach.
| Pros | Cons |
| ✅ Most beautiful view | ❌ Sunbeds are expensive |
| ✅ Crystal clear water | ❌ Pebbles (Bring water shoes!) |
| ✅ Great Beach Bar | ❌ Hard to park |
3. Žnjan (Znjan) Beach: The Family Giant
Best For: Families with older kids & Parking.
- The Vibe: Huge, open, and modern. It is a series of pebble bays connected by a long promenade.
- Why Families Love It: There are trampolines, bouncy castles, pancake stands, and plenty of space. You aren’t sitting on top of your neighbor.
- Accessibility: It has the best wheelchair access in Split.
| Pros | Cons |
| ✅ Huge parking lot | ❌ A bit far from center (10 min Uber) |
| ✅ Lots of activities for kids | ❌ No natural shade (Rent umbrella) |
| ✅ Never feels too crowded | ❌ Not very “historic” looking |
4. Bene Beach: The Pine Forest Escape
Best For: Shade seekers & Introverts.
- The Vibe: Located on the north side of Marjan Hill, this is where you go to escape the heat.
- The Shade: Thick pine forest grows right down to the water. You can sleep in the shade all day without an umbrella.
- The Terrain: It is rocky/concrete. You jump into the water from stone piers. Not great for toddlers, perfect for adults.
- Getting There: You CANNOT drive here. Take Bus No. 12 or the Tourist Train.
| Pros | Cons |
| ✅ 100% Natural Shade | ❌ Rocky entry (Slippery!) |
| ✅ Tennis courts & playground | ❌ No car access |
| ✅ Very quiet | ❌ Water is slightly cooler here |
5. Obojena (Ježinac): The Local Hangout
Best For: Young people & Budget travelers.
- The Vibe: No fancy sunbeds. No expensive cocktails. Just locals with towels, beers from the supermarket, and clear deep water.
- Location: Just before Kašjuni. It’s a 20-minute walk from the West Coast (Zapadna Obala).
Summary: Which one to choose?
- I want Sand: Go to Bačvice.
- I want the “Wow” Photo: Go to Kašjuni.
- I want Shade: Go to Bene.
- I have Kids: Go to Žnjan or Bačvice.
Practical Tips for Split Beaches
- Buy Water Shoes: 90% of our beaches are pebble or rock. Your feet will hurt. Buy those ugly rubber shoes (€10) at any kiosk. You will thank me later.
- Sea Urchins: They live in clean water. If you see black spikes on the bottom, don’t step on them! (Another reason for water shoes).
- FKK (Nudism): Croatia has a strong naturist culture. Almost every major beach has a secluded “FKK” section on the far edges. Don’t be shocked.
Want to swim in the really blue water?
The city beaches are nice, but the Blue Lagoon is on another level.
If you want that electric-blue, Maldives-style water, you need to get on a boat.
This Blue Lagoon & 3 Islands Tour takes you to bays that are impossible to reach by car.
