Imagine watching Verdi’s Aida performed inside a 1,700-year-old Roman palace.
In Split, we don’t build fake sets for our plays. We just use the city.
For one month every summer (mid-July to mid-August), the streets, squares, and parks of Split transform into open-air stages for the Split Summer Festival (Splitsko Ljeto).
If you are a lover of opera, ballet, or classical music, this is the most magical time to visit. Forget the noise of the beach bars—this is Split at its most sophisticated. Here is your guide to the 2026 program and how to get tickets.
The Main Event: Aida on the Peristyle
The absolute highlight of the festival is the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida.
- The Venue: The Peristyle Square (Peristil).
- Why it’s special: The square was built by Emperor Diocletian, who was famously obsessed with Egypt (he brought 12 sphinxes to Split). When the opera is performed here, the Roman columns, the Sphinx, and the Cathedral become the set. The acoustics are natural and haunting.
- The Experience: Sitting on the ancient stone steps under the stars while a 50-person choir sings the Triumphal March is a bucket-list experience.
Other Iconic Venues
The festival isn’t just about opera. It takes place all over the city.
- Sustipan Park: A cliff-top park overlooking the sea. This is usually the venue for open-air concerts and dramas. It is incredibly romantic, with the smell of pine trees and the sound of waves crashing below during the quiet moments of the play.
- Meštrović Gallery (Crikvine): The former home of Croatia’s greatest sculptor. Often used for ballet and smaller, intimate concerts.
- HNK (National Theater): Some performances happen indoors in the stunning 19th-century yellow theater building.

Is it English-Friendly?
- Opera (Aida, Nabucco): Yes! Music is universal, and there are often subtitles projected on the walls.

The “Secret” Opera: Ero s onoga svijeta
While Aida gets the fame, the locals love Ero the Joker (Ero s onoga svijeta).
It is a comic Croatian opera. It is funny, lighthearted, and features traditional folk costumes and dancing. It is often performed near the Vrlička Česma (Vrlika Fountain) in the hinterland 1-hour drive from Split or at the Bene beach stage in Split. If you want to see authentic Croatian culture, book this.

See the stage by day?
Before you watch the show at night, you need to understand where you are sitting.
On my Diocletian’s Palace Walking Tour, we stand right in the center of the Peristyle. I explain the acoustic secrets of the square and show you the exact spot where the Emperor sat—which is exactly where the opera singers perform today.
